Dementia is a gradual decline of mental functions, such as thinking, concentration, memory assessment, and, which effects a person's ability to perform normal daily activities. Brain function is effected enough to disrupt normal life of a person's social or work.
Dementia Symptoms may include asking the same questions repeatedly; becoming lost in familiar places, not able to follow instructions; get confused about time, people and places, and ignoring personnel safety, hygiene, and nutrition. People with dementia loose their abilities at different levels.
Dementia Caused by various conditions. Two of the most common form of dementia in the elderly is Alzheimer disease and multi-infarct dementia (sometimes called vascular dementia). Types of dementia are irreversible, which means they cannot be cured. (Symptoms associated with dementia often can be treated, however.)
Dementia Symptoms can be caused by high fever, dehydration, vitamin deficiency and poor nutrition, bad reactions to medicines, problems with the thyroid gland, or a minor head injury. Medical conditions such as these can be serious and should be treated by a doctor as soon as possible.
Sometimes older people have emotional problems that can be mistaken for dementia. Feeling sad, lonely, worried, or bored may be more common for older people facing retirement or death of a spouse, relative, or friend. Adopt to this change makes some people feeling confused or forgetful. Emotional problems can be eased by the support of friends and family, or with professional help from a doctor or therapist.
